Be it Cricket or Business – You Cannot Win Without Being an Effective Team Player

Enrolling in MBA at FIIB was a life-changing decision for me as it made me realise how focused and determined I’m about my long-term career success – of being able to blend my passion with my professional desires. With all the time management skills that I’ve gained here, I’m able to keep a good balance between my life as a student in college and as a cricket player outside.” –Nirbhay Godlaw, 2019-21, MBA-HR, FIIB.

Following my childhood dream

Cricket has been my greatest passion ever since I remember, from watching cricket as a kid to actually start playing the sport more seriously as I grew up to adulthood. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virendra Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni were my childhood heroes. I joined the cricket academy at my school during a summer camp at Modern Convent School, Dwarka. Since then I have played cricket at various levels and been part of various league  teams.

I have played various BCCI and DDCA tournaments. I have represented DDCA Delhi under 19 team at Cooch Behar Trophy. I participated in the Ranji Conditioning Camp in 2012 and DDCA Delhi under 25 Cricket Camp in 2013. I have played on a stipend for Delhi Development Authority. I have played alongside Shikhar Dhawan, and IPL players Pawan Negi, Unmukt Chand, Nitish Rana, etc. I have also played against International Cricket Team Of Nepal. I also play for Telefunkan, a Delhi Cricket Club and Delhi Capitals Academy Bal Bhavan School as an opening Batsman. I have played two premier tournaments of DDCA, namely – Super league and Hot weather Semi – final at the Feroh Shah Kotla ground (now known as Arun Jaitley Stadium) in Delhi.

Cricket has taught me many lessons

As I walk down to the middle of the ground and to the pitch I forget everything else in my life. I just focus on one ball at a time. It relaxes me from every stress of life. The competitiveness and the adrenaline rush which cricket brings into my life motivates me a lot. Cricket has shaped my personality, made me a very competitive person and also helped me become a more balanced person. I can take both victory and defeat into my stride well.

Following my passion in to my Classroom

Cricket has also made me a passionate person and I have been able to use my learnings from the field into my classroom. Teamwork is one thing that I’ve found common between cricket and my MBA at FIIB. Cricket is a team game. Being a team player, I’ve been able to adapt myself well to any and all group situations and activities at the institute. I have been able to  lead, motivate and work in teams, and also extract the best out of my teammates. I’ve also found leadership as a very important attribute required both in a cricket player as well as an MBA student when doing a project.

But my life at FIIB has taught me many other values too. One big thing that I have learned at FIIB is planning and managing my time well and keeping a good balance between my life as a student at college and outside it as a cricket player. FIIB gave me a chance to show my passion for cricket when I participated in our annual sports meet, Ranbhoomi. I scored 115 runs and took 5 wickets in two matches. I led my team into the finals as Captain of my side. After enrolling for my MBA at FIIB I have become even more focused and determined to play cricket, for it is the most important thing in my life. At FIIB, I have been able to enrich my life both as a cricketer and as a management student.
