Treading a new path

Long live Anna Hazare. That is the belief people carry, for he gave us a glimpse of India without corruption, bribery, and the black money. He, in his Nehru topi and with the  Gandhian ideology together with Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and others, started a movement from the Jantar Mantar. This was a movement to bring JAN LOKPAL BILL also known as Citizen’s ombudsman Bill, an independent corruption investigation body that would work towards the eradication of corruption at all levels, redress grievances of citizens and protect whistle-blowers. Together, they formulated a weapon of mass destruction, “Anshan”. This movement backed up by anshan brought people from all parts of the country under one roof of Jantar Mantar. The word “Annagiri”  became the driving force of the movement.

Seeing the tremendous support of people from all over the country, the Government finally agreed to bring Lokpal Bill into the session.

But even after one year the Government was unsuccessful in passing the Lokpall bill. Eventually, Anna and his team decided to sit on anshan with a slight change. Instead of Anna, this time his comrades in faith – Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai  sat on anshan. What they expected was a re-enactment of last year. They presumed that again there would be a huge support with thousands turning up at Jantar Mantar and the Government crawling under Anna’s pressure. However the reality was different. People did come but fell way short of the team’s expectations. Realising the lower turnout of people together with the lack of media attention, Anna decided to sit on anshan himself from the fourth day. With his inclusion in the hunger strike people started pouring in which created a media interest thus increased its coverage.

However even after 10 days, when Anna saw that the Government was completely unperturbed by their second innings, he in a knee jerk reaction decided to cease the hunger strike and announced that they will now work towards developing a political party. The decision was not even discussed with the other team members. It appears that the UPA played their cards well by completely ignoring the movement. But what they failed to anticipate was Anna’s decision to form a political party as he has always refrained himself from active politics.

This decision of team Anna received mixed response from both – critics and the public. Some support them saying that one has to get their hands dirty in order to complete the cleaning process. Others say that they supported team Anna for their completely different approach towards eradicating corruption and that politics would eventually dilute the core mission and vision of the movement.

As per Anna Hazare it is high time that a completely new political party is brought into existence where candidates are selected from grassroot level who share the same values as the team and would work towards wiping out the corruption.

I believe that this new direction which they have adopted to continue their fight is a welcome move.

First of all looking at the attitude of the government, it was apparent that there were meek chances that the LOKPAL BILL will be passed. This worry was proved right when the congress released a statement stating that they will not pass the bill in this session, immediately after Anna announced his decision to quit anshan.

Secondly loosing key people like Anna Hazare, Arvind  Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai in the process of anshan would have been pointless as they are the backbone of the movement.

Thirdly, Congress, BJP, Samajvadi Party etc. have been in the political arena for a very long time. As a result these politicians treat their political positions as their birth right which they can pass down to their children. This has been demonstrated in various states including U.P.

Finally, A completely new political party would bring new hope and we can expect that they would be more efficient and less corrupt than their predecessors. Looking at  the dedication of team Anna we can be sure that they will act as the true representatives of the Citizens of India and can hope to see the promises made by them being fulfilled.

Of course, the path they have chosen is no cakewalk as they will be facing the brutality of the Indian politics where everyday a politician reaches a new low in abusing his powers.

But I believe, if these people are ready to sacrifice their life for us and our future generations in order to give us corruption free India, then we ought to support them in order to help them  overcome all the impediments that our corrupt, seasoned politicians have to offer.
